mmmmmmmmmm Blueberries!

Things have been going well. There seem to be new challenges every week and sometimes I just wish we could a "baseline" week without any surprises, but then again I suppose that's half the fun. (Harharhar - totally being sarcastic.)

Mackenzie's having some blood pressure and heart rate problems, and we're in the midst of getting that solved. The nephrologist wants to bring a cardiologist in to trouble shoot, so to speak. Hopefully our pediatrician can get the referral out quickly (it seems to typically take them about 3 weeks). The nephro is also trying to get an echo scheduled sooner than we had originally planned, and we hope to have that done while waiting for the cardiology consult to get in. *sigh* It's hard for me not to hit the panic button right now since this is a new problem that we've never encountered before. Plus I'm just not very patient and I'm not used to having to "wait" for tests. I'm accustomed to the NICU where everything was inhouse and done the same day. I'm sure by the time everything is said and done with Mackenzie, my patience will have expanded exponentially.

But anyway! Mackenzie's doing super with working on her developmental milestones. I forgot to mention that Mac had her 9 month checkup and that it went really well. I had to fill out a 10 month developmental survey for her, but after seeing all the "no"s the pedi had me fill out a 6 month one as well. She's still pretty behind (although making terrific progress in catching up!) One thing she did ace on her 10 month eval was helping to dress herself. She actually pushes her arms into sleeves and pulls them out. So she's 4 months ahead on that. Woohoo! Mac's so close to rolling over completely it's becoming a nail biting situation. We're just waiting for that day. I told her physical therapist that my main goal right now is to get her sitting independently before her first birthday.

Mackenzie has discovered her trach. <:-O In the NICU she loved holding on to her vent circuit and pulling it off, but now she's fiddling with the trach itself. During one of our "napping while on an HME" sessions (which she's been doing really well at btw), she wrapped her little hand around her HME and fell asleep that way. Yesterday was a "let me stick my finger in my trach" day. Thank goodness for trach guards so she couldn't get it all the way in. But quite literally every couple of hours I was having to busy her hands from playing with her trach. I don't make it a negative thing, but I'd prefer she play with toys rather than her airway. ;o)

A friend of mine (I love you Nessa) recommend a product by Munchkin called a Fresh Food Feeder. Originally I was going to wait until talking with the Speech Therapist about it, but she made such a to-do that I went out at got the Fresh Feeding Set and then stopped off at Harris Teeter to grab some organic blueberries, bananas, apples, and pears. I hate to drive all the way out there but it's the only supermarket I know of that sells organic produce. Right now I'm letting Mackenzie "discover" the feeder before I put any food in it. She seems keen on gnawing on the plastic part, but not so much the mesh. If she's tolerating it well then in the next day or two I'll throw in some freshly ground blueberries to start with. Blueberries tend to be pretty flavorful, so I'm thinking that might be a good start. I have some Dreft Stain Remover on hand too. ;o)

Alright, I'm off of here and will update as things progress!

My 7 month old (without and oral aversion) doesn't chew on the mesh part of that feeder either! I hope you have better luck with it!

Oh no, I hope Autumn never discovers her trach but I guess she will eventually..that's nerve-racking. You know, I should try the feeder thing with Autumn...my niece loved hers when she was little but never thought about getting Autumn one. Mac's getting so big and that is awesome she wants to help dress herself. That is something we try to work on with Autumn but she's not interested in helping. lol

My dd loves the mesh thing, but only after I put little pieces of ice in it. After that, she loved it. When she's teething, I put frozen banana slices in it. She loves it now, but it took a while! HTH!
